Max Wintermark

Max Wintermark is a Swiss-American neuroradiologist renowned for his pioneering work in perfusion scanning of the brain. He is a professor and the Chair of Neuroradiology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and holds the Frank T. McGraw Memorial Chair in the Study of Cancer. Moreover, Dr. Wintermark is the President-Elect of the American Society of Neuroradiology and the Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Neuroradiology (AJNR). His past roles include serving as the president of the American Society of Functional Neuroradiology and as a chair of the Research Committee of the American Society of Neuroradiology. His contributions to the field of neuroradiology have been recognized with the American Society of Neuroradiology Outstanding Contributions in Research Award in 2022.

Dr. Wintermark received his medical degree from the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, followed by a diagnostic radiology residency at the same institution and a fellowship in Diagnostic Neuroradiology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He is board-certified in Diagnostic Radiology with a Certificate of Added Qualification in Neuroradiology. Additionally, he has a degree in biomedical engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and a master's degree in clinical research from the UCSF. His MBA was obtained from the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Before his current appointment, Dr. Wintermark was a faculty member and Chief of Neuroradiology at both the University of Virginia and Stanford University. At Stanford, he was the Founding Deputy Co-Director of the Stanford Center for Precision Mental Health and Wellness.

Dr. Wintermark’s diverse research program includes clinical and preclinical studies across a spectrum of conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, brain tumors, advanced neuroimaging, novel imaging techniques, artificial intelligence, epilepsy, movement disorders, and psychiatric disorders. Dr. Wintermark was the neuroradiologist for the team that treated the first patient with transcranial MRI-guided focused ultrasound in North America. At The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, his research is particularly focused on cancer imaging techniques, especially in the context of brain tumor imaging. As of March 2024, Dr. Wintermark's scholarly output includes more than 600 articles with over 125,000 citations and an H-index of 103. His literary contributions extend to authoring four books, over 100 book chapters, and holding 10 patents.
