We watch as reviewers shine a new light on authors' work, identifying weakness in conception or expression, suggesting refinements, urging authors to clarify a point or better support an argument. The process is occasionally uncomfortable but it is almost always respectful and constructive and papers are uniformly better for this input. At the Journal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems (JAMES) we are fortunate to have a pool of reviewers who volunteer their time, insight, knowledge, and intelligence to improve the work of their colleagues and peers. It is no small task: In 2018, we received 715 reviews by 494 individuals. On behalf of the entire editorial board and our authors we thank you all for your selfless contributions to strengthening our community.https://doi.org/10.1029/2019MS001699
