Method: this is a comparative study between students from a public and a private university who are beginning their university career. It is a quantitative, descriptive and explanatory investigation of a cross-sectional nature, with non-probabilistic, non-experimental sampling. Linear regression and correlation analysis was used, as well as a decision tree based on the variables considered relevant. Results: the results show that high levels of reading comprehension ensure a high probability of success in academic performance.
