Summary:This paper discusses the historical development of Serbian spiritual music and its educational importance in elementary school teaching of music culture. The aim was to determine the role of Serbian spiritual music in the formation and development of the Serbian national identity, as well as its pedagogical and didactic-methodical value in teaching. Regarding this matter, the paper perceives the development of Serbian spiritual music in the context of wider social and historical events in this region. It emphasized its undoubted importance in the formation of the Serbian national identity within the medieval Serbian state, as well as in the preservation of the Serbian culture during the rule of the Turks in these regions. Curricula and programs were analysed to determine the presence of Serbian spiritual music in them. It was pointed out the great educational and national significance and importance of Serbian spiritual music in teaching, and the need for more adequate didactic-methodical interpretation of these contents in the teaching process. Getting to know Serbian spiritual music will contribute to the moral development of students, their religious and national education. For this reason, the paper pointed out the need for greater representation of the content of spiritual topics in current programs and music culture textbooks. Method of analysis and synthesis and content analysis were used in this paper.
