The main purpose was to check the secondary nucleation of HEMA. Kinetics during polymerization, glass transition temperature, and physical properties such as surface tension, pH and conductivity were also studied. The core (seed) was composed of BA and MMA and the shell was comprised of BA, MMA and HEMA. Five series, twenty five syntheses, containing 0-40 mol% HEMA in monomer composition with three different BA/MMA molar ratios (1:1, 2:1, 1:2) and pure BA, pure MMA respectively, were synthesized and compared. The seeds were synthesized through batch emulsion polymerization. The core-shell latexes were synthesized through semi-batch emulsion polymerization. Average particle sizes of the latexes were determined by dynamic light scattering (DLS). However, due to the blindness of DLS to small particles, transmission electron microscope (TEM) was used to verify the particle size and detect small particles. Kinetic data was measured gravimetrically. Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) was used to obtain the glass transition temperature. Conductivities and pHs were obtained from OAKTON pH/conductivity meter. Surface tension was measured by DuNouy Tensionmeter. 2015-09-15 English text University of Akron / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=akron1436453067 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=akron1436453067 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
