Applied Mathematics corrosion galvanic crevice pitting aluminum steel model In this thesis, a one dimensional model is developed to investigate the initial stages ofcorrosion in a fastener assembly consisting of a stainless steel fastener and aluminum7075 as the plate. Differential equations are formulated and solved to determine theprofiles for the potential, the oxygen concentration, and the aluminum ion concentrationin the crevice, and also the potential in the bulk electrolyte. This fastener systemexhibits galvanic corrosion, pitting corrosion, and crevice corrosion. It is found thatthe potential decreases monotonically down the length of the crevice, the oxygen concentrationdecreases exponentially down the length of the crevice, and the aluminumion concentration builds up away from the mouth of the crevice. It is conjecturedthat the location of maximum aluminum ion concentration is where the most severecorrosion will occur. A parameter study is also done to study the effect of changesto the diffusivity, crevice width, and other parameters on the model calculations. 2016-06-07 English text University of Akron / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=akron1462813186 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=akron1462813186 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
