Issues addressed include traffic modeling, system architecture, transport protocols, and performance analysis. One of the integrated systems studied is the integration of ground terrestial and low earth orbiting(LEO) satellite system. Problems to be studied in this dissertation are summerized as follows. 1.Traffic modeling, the traffic models proposed in this dissertation can be used to derive performance measures of a mobile communication system such as call blocking rate, droping rate, and channel utilization. 2.Hierachical mobile communication system, two hierachical structures are studied. The first system consists of microcells, regular cells and macrocells. The second system is a two-layer satellite system to replace a single-layer global satellite network. Comparing with the single-layer network, not only the system performance is improved but also the number of satellites can be reduced. 3. Effect of user authentication. This work investigates the effect of user authentication on the performance aspect of a cellular mobile communication network. The performance measures examined include channel utilization, call success rate, and call drop rate. 4. Integrated voice and data transmission using demand-assigned-movable-boundary protocol in a LEO satellite network. Multiplexers are used to concentrate traffic emitted from a group of voice users plus a data user. The channel is shared by a number of multiplexers using distributive demand assigned TDMA.
