Cross-sectional and retrospective method was applied and 360 nurses from 4 departments (including psychiatric, medical-surgical, emergency departments and intensive-care units) were enrolled. Subjects were asked to respond to a valid and reliable questionnaire which asked about attitude and confidence in nursing, besides sociodemographic data. We thus analysed the association between attitude and confidence of nursing for caring patients with alcohol problems and clinical experience and sociodemographic data. Multiple regression analysis was also used to explore the cumulative variance of independent variables for attitude and confidence of nursing. The results revealed, 1.) 60% of respondent had experience of caring patients with alcohol-related problems and the mean of number of patients cared was 3.6. 2) Teaching courses regarding issue of alcohol were 2.3 hours during nursing school in average; 13.1% of the total respondent had received further training in their working hospitals, while 5.6% of them received such training . 3.) Hours of training were positively associated with the open attitudes of care. 4.) The factors which may increase confidence level of nursing were: working at psychiatric unit, higher respondents'' positions, older age, more training course received, more experiences in psychiatric nursing training. 5.) Predicting factors of confidence of nursing were ranked as: related training (strongest predictor), working years and current working unit and these 3 factors could account for 12.4% of total variances. We thus made suggestions on current nursing education, clinical practice and further research direction as based on our preliminary finding. Mei-Sang Yang 楊美賞 1999 學位論文 ; thesis 109 zh-TW
