Much research has been or is going to be conducted to understand the business adoption and utilization of knowledge management systems in United States and Western Europe. However, similar research is still absent in Taiwan. To understand the current status in Taiwan, compare and analyze the results with other countries, and examine the effect of organizational culture, the study applied survey and case study methods. The results indicate that almost fifty percent of Taiwanese company has adopted knowledge management systems. The percentage is close to the results from Alavi and Leidner (1999). Most of those adopted companies are high-tech, large-sized, keenly competitive, and knowledge sharing-style. Moreover, companies with innovative or supportive culture incline to adopt knowledge management systems. Conversely, a bureaucratic company inclines to not adopt. As to the utilization of knowledge management systems in Taiwanese companies, we found that companies with bureaucratic culture are information-oriented while supportive companies are cultural- and management-oriented.
