Shortage of bicycle parking supply at MRT stations has become a serious problem in Taipei. It demonstrates that the existing simple method used to estimate bicycle parking spaces for MRT station design cannot meet the actual demand. There is a need to examine the validity of the present procedure for planning bicycle parking facility at MRT stations.
In this research, factors affecting bicycle parking demand are investigated. Through questionnaire survey, field observation and statistical analysis, five major factors are identified as follows:
*number of inbound passengers during morning peak period
*number of bus routes at MRT station
*employment density of the area within 500 meters from MRT station
*total number of students (age over 16) and employed residents in the area between 500 to 1700 meters from MRT station
*percentage of hilly area around MRT station
Based on the above-mentioned affecting factors, a regression model is developed. Results of statistical tests show that the model is satisfactory.
Survey results also show that theft, insufficient bicycle parking facility, lack of right-of-way for safe riding, and poor quality of roadway are the most annoying disincentives to bicycle users.
