Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立臺灣大學 === 國際企業學研究所 === 91 === The foundry model not only rewrote the landscape of global semiconductor industry but bloomed the electronics industry in Taiwan. Many people would be interested in the successful factors of TSMC and UMC and they would also want to know what would they do in the future. This research is based on case study and the time period of 1995-2003 is selected. The study emphasizes on what kind of logic behind these companies’ strategies when they face capacity expansion and technology development decisions and also focuses on global configuration strategies of TSMC and UMC. TSMC tended to expand capacity by wholly owned way while UMC preferred to expand with design companies. And what they considered when these two companies think about global configurations are also different. The research indicates conclusions:(1)capacity expanded by joint venture will cost less capital expenditure, however, businesses need to develop capacity by their own in the long run because it is the more stable way. (2)businesses need to consider local market characters and their global logistic abilities when they think about global configuration strategies. And what kind of effect will cause on foundry incumbents if IDMs full-scale enter into foundry industry is an interesting point.
