Two groups of participants were chosen in the experiment. Group One consisted of 15 college freshmen of Music Department at the National Taichung Teachers college while Group Two consisted of 15 college freshmen of Accounting Department at Providence University. One survey was conducted to understand the personal information and musical background. Two tests were given to investigate their performance of perception and production on English intonation. Results indicate musicians do not attain more native-like English intonation than non-musicians at the same level of proficiency. Performance in production revealed musicians doing slightly well with either the isolated sentence or contextual text type. Correlation between types also showed proficiency not affecting group performance, while motivation did exert some influence. This may suggest that musicians may attain better intonation patterns if the sample size is big enough. Overall performance of 30 participants showed a relatively inadequate ability in English intonation. After years of learning, learners in Taiwan did not show any better awareness of intonation. Participants showed a tendency of favoring rising tones while producing question-like sentences. Falling tone still poses more problems for participants than rising intonation in this study. This research proved that even though participants have experience in music, they still encounter similar problems of attaining a native-like intonation patterns that general language learners have.
