The applications of these quantum dots for cell labeling were also demonstrated. CdSe/ZnS quantum dots with sizes of about 2-5 nm were coated with cysteine and the resulted products were soluble and dispersive in aqueous buffer. The cysteine-quantum dots were delivered into U-87MG (ATCC HTB-14TM is a hypodipoid human cell line) cells by liposome transfection and the internalized quantum dots were still visible 8 days after transfection. By using EDC/NHS as coupling agent, hyaluronic acid was successfully coupled to the quantum dots. The hyaluronate -coupled quantum dots were transported into the breast cancer cells (ATCC HTB-129) which expressed large amounts of CD44. The internalized hyaluronate-quantum dots appeared to aggregate inside endosomes. The hyaluronate-quantum dots did not bind to the fibroblast cells which did not express CD44 - the receptor of hyaluronic acid.
