Preparation of these subject liquid crystals was completed in a sort two-step reactions, the addition of 4-alkoxyphenylmagnesium bromides to N-phenyloxycarbonyl-3-cyanopyridinium chloride afford a 1,2-dihydropyridine, which was then oxidized by o-chloronil.
