Therefore, products’ concepts and ideas hardly reach excellent quality. During the creation process, many relevant concepts or objects are usually borrowed to shapes the product form. Based on imitation or association, feature-matching method is more or less used to think of designs. The research tries to collect many concepts and their attributions for reference in order to offer designers a much easy way for association. It uses the software, Excel, to build the feature-matching database which offers an easy way to recognize the relation among these associations. The research includes four stages. The first stage discusses the logic of feature-matching design, understands the issue of “concept” and “characteristic” in cognitional psychology, analyzes the value of computer’s database in assisting design and the framework of experts’ system, and then builds the database for metaphor design. The second stage runs a pre-experiment to see if people tend to have potential feature-matching thinking. The subjects are people both with and without industrial design background. In the third stage, the research conducts a pre-testing experiment. All the subjects are with industrial design background. They apply the concepts derived from the database to develop design ideas and receive interview during the experiment. In the way, we can notice the problems and advices on database’s content and operation for the further amendment. In the fourth stage, it carry out the main experiment to test if it save the time on idea development and increase the quantity of concept and improve the relevance. The subjects all have more than four years design experience. They conduct two kinds of design experiments with and without of the assistant of database. The result proves that the application of feature-matching database in design can reduce the time designers spend in developing horizontal thinking and produce much more relevant references for design.
