Summary:碩士 === 國立體育大學 === 體育研究所 === 95 === The purpose of this study was to explore the leisure sports participation motivation, reasons for continuation, and perceived benefits of retired police officials in Taipei. By adopting qualitative approach, this study interviewed 8 retired police officials who regularly participated in leisure sports within last three years. The interview procedures included developing interview guidelines, semi-structural and in-depth interviews. With field notes and transcripts, this study used Strauss and Cobin (1997) ground theory to conceptualize the original data by open coding and axial coding. After triangulation with both between authors and materials, this study found the following results: 1. Leisure sports participation motivation were identified with 6 categories as followings:(1)health and fitness;(2) tranquility of mind and body;(3)social needs;(4)self achievement;(5)need to know;(6)self interest. By interviewees’ frequencies of categories, it was found participants identified health and fitness; tranquility of mind and body; self achievement; and self interest as major motivation for leisure sport participation motivation. 2. There were 9 categories as reasons for continuation including: (1) maintaining and enhancing health and fitness; (2) enriching life experiences: (3) facilitating social relationship; (4) promoting life qualities; (5) gaining social supports; (6) self interests; (7) expanding knowledge; (8) promoting self; (9) refining mind and intelligence. All these reasons made participants considering the most import drives for continuation. 3. In terms perceived benefits of leisure sports participation, participants identified 19 categories as follows: (1) promoting life enjoyment; (2) enriching life contents; (3) enriching life experiences; (4) enhancing vigor and emotion; (5) balancing life experiences; (6) enhancing health and fitness; (7) enlightening mind and intelligence; (8) promoting family life quality;(9)facilitating interpersonal relationship;(10) cultivating life environment protection attitudes; (11) integrating life contents; (12) open one’s vision through activity processes; (13) fulfilling one’s potentials; (14) appreciating the beauty of life; (15) acknowledging the meaning of leisure activity; (16) sharing and appreciation; (17) enhancing self concept; and (18) self actualization. According to these results, this study proposed several leisure sports planning strategies for related institutions and policy makers. Also, this study suggested several directions for the future studies.
