Description
Summary:碩士 === 世新大學 === 經濟學研究所(含碩專班) === 95 === This paper focuses on the determining factors which may influence the graduate’s decisions on pursuing post-graduate education or entering the labor market. These elements include traits of the individual, the family and the school. Then we will analyze the effect of different factors affecting on career choice. We use the “Graduate Survey” of Advanced Education Database and discuss the relationship between each element and career choice using the Chi-square test and the binary logit model. The database was established by National Tsing Hua University. Conclusions: (i) Male students are more likely to take further education. (ii) People who obtain professional certification are more likely to give up further education. (iii) Because of the personal ability and the evaluation of schools, the graduate who is from the national universities tends to continue further education. (iv) The student who majors in business management, medical, humanity and society is going to enter the labor market, and the student who majors in mathematics, physics and other fields is going to take further education. (v) We can divide the types of part-time job experience into: 1. part-time job during summer and winter vacation 2. part-time job outside of the school 3. practice 4. other kinds of part-time jobs (part-time job in the school and the tutor) When talking about the relationship between “the experience of part-time jobs” and “the career choice,” graduates who have the second or third type of experience are more likely to enter the labor market. Other graduates who have the fourth type of experience tend to pursue more education. Moreover, when we independently analyze the career choice of the graduate who has the first type of experience, the outcome of the Chi-square test is not equal to that of the logit model. (vi) The students whose parents received high education are more likely to take further education as well. When children are deciding either to take further education or enter the labor market, the father has more influence on the decision than the mother does. (vii) The social status of the parents hardly influences children’s career choices. (viii) The grades which students had received in school greatly influence their decisions. Everything else being equal, students who received higher grades in universities will be more likely to take further education. (ix) The students who are from highly-rated universities are more likely to pursue advanced degrees. However, when talking about the environment of higher education in Taiwan, the satisfaction in the university is not the key influence on students’ decisions.
