The purpose of this study is to synthesize mechanism design concepts of multi-step push-button locks based on a systematic approach. First of all, the classifications of mechanical locks are introduced, and the classifications, definition and development of mechanical push-button locks are described. Mechanical push-button locks can be classified into four types, including the one-step type, sequential type, repeatable type and multi-step type. The one-step, sequential, and repeatable push-button locks are further analyzed to conclude their structural characteristics as well as the design requirements and constraints of the multi-step push-button locks. Based on the Yan’s creative mechanism design methodology, the concepts and atlas of feasible designs are synthesized systematically. Two feasible mechanisms are further chosen for integral design. Finally, the developed computer simulation and physical model proves that the design results fulfill the requirements of motion.
