With the advent of transportation in both railroad and highway system which in turn acted the role used to played by this harbor city, Kauhsiung city was losing its past glories and the facilities of this harbor were dilapidating. In order to find second chances for those languishing and vacant harbor facilities, the city authorities has started to reexamine space structure in urban areas and initiated its blueprint for this city as a “harbor one” since 2001. Hence, the idea of water wharfs has become the focus in the design and construction of this city. This dissertation focuses on the current situation and future development of this city, on insight analysis of Kaohsiung wharf vision design and furthermore on the induction of its features and symbolic meanings. The research subjects range in topics from Kaoshiung wharf Number one to twentieth (No.1~22) but most of the spotlight would be laid on the more representative ones , like True Love Pier and Sing-Uang Wharf which have a more complete image design related to the holistic concept of harbor city. The methodology of this thesis is based on in-depth interview and field research. Through interviews and countless field research, the author carried out visual studies on the subjects. The elements of visual design include Space, Color, Form, Function, and Marketing. This research is trying to discuss the design elements and their symbolic meanings from the original design perspectives. The upshot of this research reveals that wharf development and reconstruction is still and mostly aimed at traditional city layout leaving out much visual design considerations. Besides, since its eventual goals are still commerce oriented, therefore, the inclusion of visual elements is unfortunately not taken into account as much as anticipated. Propositions of bringing in more vision prospects in the other remaining wharfs are highly recommended by which hopefully the result of this development will be more corresponding to the original ideology.
