The second chapter discusses the Lieder’s origin from the Middle Age to the Romantic era. The third chapter is split into two parts. The first part of the third chapter introduces Robert Schumann’s life and the second part of the chapter is about the characteristics of Schumann’s lieder. In the fourth chapter, discusses the partial analysis of Schumann’s work including translation, rhyme and forms, the using flowers as metaphors, connotation of verse, analyzing the music, and the meaning of his work. The format of the fourth chapter follows those laid out provided by Professor Phyllis M. T. Hsi (1997). Hugo Wolf’s Mörike Lider. (Taipei: Mercury Publishing House). The final chapter discusses the author’s point of Schumann’s work, which came after the studies that concluded with this thesis.
