It could be a feasible method to protect sensitive satellite image using the fusion scheme of cryptography and steganography. This dissertation proposes two lossy and lossless steganographic methods, respectively, to meet possible requirements for future applications of military image and hopefully, can provide with useful reference for the military. For the application of lossy steganography, we first propose a steganographic method for overlaying a military map on a satellite image. The proposed method uses a modified simple LSB replacement technique to embed a binary map in the least significant bit plane of a satellite image. The proposed method not only can maintain the properties of easy implementation and high capacity of the simple LSB replacement techniques, but also can resist the statistical attacks. Due to the above superiority, the proposed method can easily overlay a binary map on a satellite image on low-bandwidth and low-computational-power devices. Second, we propose a high-capacity steganography to hide military images in natural images. In this scheme, an efficient human visual model is used to efficiently adapt to the human visual system to provide high capacity and imperceptibility simultaneously for hiding military images in natural images. For lossless steganography, we first propose a novel histogram-based steganographic method using prediction errors of images. Compared with the existing histogram-based methods, the proposed method can not only provide larger payload, but also provide better stego-image quality. The proposed method could be applied to conceal the spatial information of confidential region for lossless satellite image protection. Second, we propose a packet-level information hiding technique. The proposed method can attach the secret information to the selected JPEG2000 packets to effectively reduce the processing time of information embedding and extraction.
