The first part of this study discusses the following issues 1. How the characteristics of the parent company, including operational experience, international experience, transferring capability and capacity of the parent company itself, affect the degree of knowledge transfer. 2. How the characteristics of the subsidiaries, including operational experience, international experience, absorptive capacity and innovation, affect the degree of knowledge transfer. 3. How the relationship between the parent company and the subsidiaries, including both the similarity between their products, the parent company accounts for the proportion of equity affiliates and the relative sizes of the companies, affect the degree of knowledge transfer. And the second part explores how knowledge transfer affects the performance of the subsidiaries. This study choose the participants that are those manufacturing enterprises starting in America and their listed subsidiaries that having applied for patent in America from OSIRIS global database and WIPS patent database, and there are 238 subsidiaries as the study sample. This study uses multiple regression to analyze the impact of variables, and the result shows: the higher transferring capacity of the parent company is, the higher the degree of knowledge transfer is; the more international experience the parent company has, the higher the degree of knowledge transfer can be; the more knowledge the parent company has, the higher the degree of the transfer is. On the other side, the more international experience the subsidiaries have, the higher the degree of knowledge transfer is. Besides, the greater the relative sizes of the parent company and its subsidiaries are, the higher degree of knowledge transfer is; the more the proportion the parent companies have among the subsidiaries, the higher degree of knowledge transfer is. And if the parent company make a higher knowledge transfer, the performance of its subsidiaries can be better. This study of knowledge transfer focuses on the relationship between the parent company and its subsidiaries about which there were few issues. Scholars can have a further discussion about this subject in the future.
