The methodology of this study was grounded in the hermeneutic phenomenology of van Manen. A purposive sampling procedure was used to recruit participants. Each participant was interviewed at least two times using an in-depth, face-to-face interview. A semi-structured interview guide was used to collect data. The first interview was conducted around 24 weeks of pregnancy after women with a diagnosis of gestational diabetes mellitus; the second interview occurred at six weeks post-partum. A thematic analysis was applied to analyze all of interview data regarding the lived experience of women with gestational diabetes mellitus. Four themes were merged: (1) focusing, (2) mood transition, (3) life framing, (4) defend and responsibility. The pregnant women were diagnosed gestational diabetes mellitus, and then they would all begin to ponder attribution of the disease, identify the problem, seek for the answers. Therefore, they search the information from every method, hoping to understand what gestational diabetes mellitus is. As the progress of pregnancy, they feel the threat of disease, have the transform of emotions, and living a controlled pregnancy. For the safety of the baby, courageously face with gestational diabetes mellitus, and doing all they can. The experience was one time different life experience for the gestational diabetes mellitus women. The screening informs and the follow-up after postpartum of gestational diabetes mellitus require more concern, while the former would affect the women’s physical and psychological reaction to the society, and the latter would be neglected. The research enables the healthcare provider to more understand the medical care, major concern, emotional impact, and the feeling and coping strategies to the gestational diabetes mellitus, in order to make pregnancy women be able to have the more complete perinatal care.
