In these the two operas, Puccini introduced lots of Chinese and Japanese folk songs, and composed many lines on pentatonic scales and Oriental instruments. He use of the 20th-century style in the arrangement of the harmonies, the rhythms and the intruments, which greatly helped in the development of the story and building the atmosphere. Therefore, the focus of this paper lies on the use of Oriental elements in the two operas, including: 1. A brief study on Puccini's life, his style, and the influence of Realism on him. 2. Puccini's motive for the composition of Turandot and Madama Butterfly. 3. A brief study on the use of Chinese and Japanese folk songs in Turandot and Madama Butterfly. 4. A brief study on the use of pentatonic scales in Turandot and Madama Butterfly. 5. A brief study on the use of Oriental instruments in Turandot and Madama Butterfly.
