A Study of Abstract Noun Definitions of Students with Hearing Impairment

碩士 === 臺北市立教育大學 === 語言治療碩士學位學程 === 99 === The purpose of the present study was to investigate the word definition ability of abstract nouns for students with hearing impairment. The study used the method of document analysis with the self-developed measure tool, the glossary of abstract nouns. The subjects of this study included eighty students, forty students with hearing impairment and the other forty students with normal hearing ability. Moreover, the subjects should be 4th-5th and 8th-9th grade students studied in Taipei city or Taipei country. The investigator utilized the oral questions to determine the level of word definition ability from each subject. After that, the investigator evaluated and scored the results in two parts, one was definitional content and the other was definitional form, and then the investigator compared the word definition ability of each group students by using statistical analysis. In addition, the investigator used error analysis to conclude the error types of definitional response from students with hearing impairment. The major findings were summarized as followings： 1. The most frequent type using by students with hearing impairment was “description/characteristic” and the most frequent forms were “Ouasi-definition” and “Partial Aristotelian definition”. 2. The scores of subjects without hearing impairment were higher than the subjects with hearing impairment. 3. The junior high school students with hearing impairment mostly got higher scores compared with the elementary school ones. 4. The error types of students with hearing impairment included “incorrect superordinate term”, “incorrect characteristic”, “using incorrect synonym”, “unclear illustration”, and “incomplete definition.” In conclusion, according to the listed findings, the investigator proposed several suggestions for education of word definition of abstract nouns and some recommendations for further investigations.
