Summary: | 碩士 === 康寧大學 === 休閒資源暨綠色產業研究所 === 100 === The purpose of this study is to design science, technology, and society (STS) courses
that investigate the effect environmental education has on the environmental knowledge,
attitudes, and behavior of elementary students regarding packaged beverages. The research
subjects were students from two sixth grade classes (31 students per class). One class was
used as the experimental group and was provided the environmental education course
regarding packaged beverages, and the other class was used as the control group, where
experimental teaching was not provided. We employed the “Questionnaire on the Purchase
Condition of Packaged Beverages and Students’ Environmental Knowledge, Attitudes, and
Behavior Toward Packaged Beverages” developed by this study to conduct pretest, posttest,
and statistical analysis.
The results show that most of the elementary students purchased packaged beverages
two to three times per week. Because the students were seldom limited by families or
teachers, they selected sugary beverages with plastic packaging. The beverages were
primarily purchased from convenience stores because of the availability. In the background
variables on the study performance analysis, the results show that the performance in the
knowledge of "resource conservation", "pollution prevention" and "the overall
environmental knowledge" varies significantly with student’s gender, and the male is
superior to the female; packaged beverages purchase whether restrained by students’ main
families or not also show have significantly different study performance in the knowledge
of "environmental impact "and" the overall environmental knowledge”, and the students
never or rarely restrained by their families show making more progress than those of
frequently or completely restrained. Other background variables have no significant
difference in study performance. In the pretest’s correlation analysis, the overall behavior
is significantly related to the overall attitudes, and the experimental group students’
attitudes are significantly related to their knowledge, while the posttest’s correlation
analysis show the experimental group students’ attitudes to be significantly related to their
behavior.
iii
After the teaching experiment, the students of the experimental group showed
significant differences in the pretest and posttest results regarding their environmental
knowledge, attitudes, and behavior toward packaged beverages; the posttest result is
superior to that of pretest. Regarding the posttest result, the environmental knowledge,
attitudes, and behavior of the two groups differed significantly. The scores of the
experimental group were higher than those of the control group, indicating that STS
courses can enhance the effectiveness of environmental education regarding packaged
beverages and the effectiveness of STS courses is superior to that of general environmental
education courses.
