Change of Living Arrangement in Taiwan –Living with Parents of Husbands

碩士 === 國立東華大學 === 社會暨公共行政學系 === 100 === It is believed that the phenomena of aging, change of family structure, and trend of fewer children, are going to affect living arrangement in Taiwan. In recent years the rate of co-residence of grown-up children and their parents have been slowly increasing, of which the co-residence of married couples and husbands’ parents accounts for the majority. Since previous studies mostly focused on factors related to elder citizens regarding the change of living arrangement, there has been a lack of attention paid to two-generation factors, let alone incorporating dynamic variables into the exploration of such two-generation impact upon the change of co-residential living arrangement. In light of that, this study aims to identify the decisive factors affecting the change of co-residence of married couples and husbands’ parents via dynamic and static variables. The subjects of this study were chosen from Panel Study of Family Dynamics (PSFD) the data from 1999 to 2000, married couples living with husbands’ parents, and analyzed via the binary logistic regression model in SPSS (version 14.0) to identify whether or not the co-residence has changed in 2006, i.e. 6 to 7 years later. The results are: (1) living arrangement of married couples is more stable and less changed; mainly staying with husbands’ parents, (2) significantly correlated to the change of staying with husbands’ parents; regarding the individual characteristics of husbands’ parents, changes occur in parents’ health situation and losses of spouses. In terms of husbands’ individual characteristics, changes occur in earned income, number of children, and house owners; wives’ individual characteristics, employed or not, (3) the binary logistic regression model shows that regarding the individual characteristics of husbands’ parents, co-residence occurs more often when father or mother is alive and in good health. As far as husbands’ individual characteristics are concerned, those who have lower earned income tend to stay with their parents; those who have stable income, no co-residence, and (4) As far as wives’ individual characteristics are concerned, those who have higher education background and/or those who have stable jobs tend to stay with their husbands’ parents; the more the income the less the co-residence. According to the resource exchange theory, it will affect the change of co-residence of married couples and husbands’ parents.
