Brahms Symphony No.4 op.98 the fourth movement, Allegro energico e passsionato, is the gravitational center of the Symphony and at the same time the most unusual symphonic movement Brahms has ever composed. It is written in a form of Chaconne, which is a set of variations over a repeating short bass theme, or basso ostinato. Very popular in the Baroque period, this form was hardly ever used since the times of Mozart and Haydn. Rather unique in the Romantic era, Brahms’ use of Chaconne preempts the resurrection of Baroque forms in the 20 century. Dramatic and peaceful, sublime and intimate, the grand Final is a crowning achievement of Brahms’ symphonic writing. 徐頌仁 2012 學位論文 ; thesis 88 zh-TW
