The former even surpasses the latter in its creative style, marking a new stage for its aesthetic development. It is especially during the reign of Emperor Kāng Xī , Yōng Zhèng and Qián Lóng that the clerical script reaches its peak, producing artistic works with highly innovative, individualized styles. Besides the introduction and conclusion, the present study is divided into four chapters. The second chapter discusses the factors which give rise to the clerical script in the mid Chíng Dynasty, such as the prosperity of epigraphy and archeology, textual criticism, and the art of literati painting and seal cutting. These not only fully utilize the writing instruments, but also help to found the development of the Chinese Calligraphy theory (ShūLùn). The third chapter examines the accomplishment (the creation of a new “simple and plain” style) and aesthetics (the fusion of the traditional and modern spirit) of the clerical script during the mid Chíng Dynasty. This chapter also briefly theorizes on the beauty and stylistic classification of the Chíng clerical script. Chapter Four analyzes the styles of some leading clerical script calligraphers during the mid Chíng Dynasty. The calligraphers’ life stories or from whom they learn the art, etc, will be discussed in this chapter. Chapter Five mainly categorizes the different styles and characteristics of the major clerical script calligraphers during the mid Chíng Dynasty. The present research finds that the prosperity and uniqueness of the clerical script in the mid Chíng Dynasty is closely related to the historical context. It presents a particular aesthetic, a fusion of power, simplicity, and homeliness, and it breaks through the bounds of traditional convention. Indeed, the clerical script of the mid Chíng Dynasty not only affords valuable historical experiences, but also provides useful guidelines for succeeding generations for its spirit of artistic creativity. 李郁周 2013 學位論文 ; thesis 214 zh-TW
