Previous studies had shown that elderly suffering from chronic diseases with high ratio, which in turns increase the demands for health care and medical costs and influence the life qualities. Therefore, to maintain the health of elderly with chronic diseases, and to establish and promote their health promoting lifestyles become the currently important issues. The purposes of this study was to explore the influential factors of health- promoting lifestyles and it’s predictors for elderly with chronic disease. This study was a cross-sectional design and purposive sampling was used to recruit 193 elderly with chronic disease from a medical center in northern Taiwan. The data were collected by self-reported questionnarires including demographics sheets, the scales of personal self-perceived health status, health-related information needs, health literacy and health-promoting lifestyle profile, and analyzed by descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe's posteriori comparison, Pearson’s product-moment correlation, and multiple regression. The p value<0.05 was considered as the statistically significant level . The major findings were as follows: 1)There were significant difference in scores of health-promoting lifestyle profile by education; 2)Among the health-promoting lifestyle profile, the highest score was the nutrition subscale and the lowest score was the sport subscale; 3)The relationships among self-perceived health status, health-related information needs, health literacy and health-promoting lifestyles were significantly positive; 4)Eduction, self- perceived health status and health-related information needs were statistically significant predictors of health-promoting lifestyles in elderly with chronic disease. Self-perceived health status was the major predictor and accounted for 13% of the total variance in health-promoting lifestyles; 5) Self-perceived health status was the mediating factor between health literacy and health-promoting lifestyles. The results will be used as the reference for drawing up the health education content and method, health related policies and interventions to promote elderly health.
