Effect of Surface Conditions on the Distribution of Si Adatoms on Si(111)-5×2/Au Surface

碩士 === 國立中正大學 === 物理學系暨研究所 === 103 === After depositing 0.5ML(monolayer) of Au atoms on a clean Si(111) surface at 700C, a reconstructed Si(111)/Au-5×2 structure can be observed. Despite the 5×2 reconstruction has been discovered forty years ago, the presence of the Si adatoms still puzzles people....

Despite the 5×2 reconstruction has been discovered forty years ago, the presence of the Si adatoms still puzzles people. Our goal is to understand how the Si adatoms distribute on the surface. We have tested a simple model based on a random distribution of Si adatoms. Except for two neighboring Si adatoms getting too close, our simple model fits the Si adatom distribution nicely. We have also prepared samples with different orientations relative to the directions of externally applied tensile and compressive strains and examined the distributions of Si adatoms. Our results show that Si adatom distribution is independent of how the external strain is applied to the surface, instead the distribution is mostly a function of Si adatom density in the 5×2 structure.
