The original scale consisted 11 categories and 71 items that was developed by Dr. I-Chuan Li. In this study, research samples were collected from nurses in long-term care facilities by using convenience sampling. A total of 455 questionnaires sent out and 398 returned. After delete 28 invalid responses, 370 were valid ones and made the response rate of this study was 81.31%. First, we conducted item analysis and the results showed that all 71 items were valid and can be keeping in the scale. The results of factor analysis showed that 6 items among 71 items can be deleted after the statistical analysis, but we decide to keep them in the scale after related literature reviewing. Eight factors that were extracted and explained 75.39% of total variance were entitled “nursing interventions”, “administration and information”, “communication and coordination”, “needs assessment”, “nursing diagnosis and plans”, “knowledge and management of medications”, “other professional abilities” and “secondary professional skills”. The communality and factor loadings were higher than 0.45, which indicated that NCS meet the standard of construct validity. For criterion-related validity, the results showed that the NCS was significantly correlated with the sense of achievement (.65,ρ<.01). The correlation coefficients between the eight categories of nursing competency and the sense of achievement ranged from .31 to .61 (ρ<.01). As for reliability, the Cronbach's α coefficient for the total NCS was 0.98 and was between 0.92 and 0.98 for eight categories. All the above results supported that the NCS has a hgier scale reliability. After we compared NCS for nurses who worked in different long-term care settings, it sensitively represented different nursing competency (F=4.03;p<.05); Nurses in residential homes had the highest competency compared to those in nurisng homes according to Scheffe's analysis results. In conclusion, the NCS for nurses in the long-term care facilities is robust in reliability and validity. The researchers can apply the NCS in the future studies to get more related evidences.
