The study also investigated the moderation effects of employee’s self-monitoring on the mediation effect of empowerment on the ethical leadership-self-efficacy relationship. We hypothesized that ethical leadership can enhance employee’s feeing of empowerment and the empowerment can further stimulate their self-efficacy. However, as employees are higher on the self-monitoring, the influence of psychological empowerment on self-efficacy will be suppressed and the mediation effect of the empowerment will be tempered. We used questionnaires to collect data from the employees in industries. To avoid common method bias we collected data in two different time points. Altogether we collected 273 sets of questionnaires. We found that ethical leadership had a positive relationship with employee’s self-efficacy through their experienced empowerment and self-monitoring diminished the mediation of empowerment. These findings show that ethical leadership is important to employee’s self-efficacy and managers need to develop their ethical leaderships in order to enhance their subordinate’s self-efficacy, especially to those who are low in their self-monitoring.
