In Taiwan, conventional farming is still very much entrenched in the habits of farmers, and while organic farming has developed over the past years, it has yet to reach a mature state. In order to assess the current state of alternative farming in Taiwan and potential improvements for the future, the successful live-experiment of Pierre Loisel's food-scraps compost farming was chosen as a case-study. Food-scraps compost has the benefit of alleviating the amount of waste to be treated and provide high-quality compost. The soundness of his farming enterprise will be evaluated through resilience thinking, and in-depth interviews will be conducted with Pierre Loisel to better understand how it is possible to create an economically viable organic farm enterprise with the use of food-waste compost. Findings from the study will paint the current state of alternative agriculture in Taiwan, its challenges, and provide reflections on ways to improve the future of organic agriculture in Taiwan.
