Description
Summary:碩士 === 輔仁大學 === 音樂學系 === 104 === Reynaldo Hahn was a composer in the early twentieth century. He was a singer, a critic, and a conductor. Hahn composed various genres of music, including opera, chamber music, instrumental music...etc., and his song composition is considered to be of the highest importance. He used sophisticated French literature and he emphasized the inseparable relationship between music and its text, making it a form of art. Hahn was gifted in writing tuneful, lyrical vocal melodies. He painted the poem with his magical touch - full of elegance, sweetness, and a hint of nostalgia. Although Hahn’s compositional style was relatively conservative comparing to his contemporary, his works presented the style and the spirit of the contemporary French mélodie of “La Belle Époque”. This dissertation starts from brief history of the French mélodie, and then the life and the compositional style of Reynaldo Hahn. The forth chapter talks about the five poets, including François Coppée, Paul Verlaine, Théophile de Viau, Claude André Theuriet, and Victor Hugo. All of their poems were used by Hahn. The fifth chapter presents seven mélodies of Hahn: Mai, D’une Prison, À Chloris, L’Heure exquise, Fêtes Galantes, Paysage and Si mes vers avaient des alles. Basic literary and musical analysis are discussed in this chapter to see how the composer execute his idea in song composition: music is based on its words.
