Portraits in the history of Chinese painting is neglected and disregarded. portrait painting first appeared from China painting history, is a branch of “Portraiture”, the skill and artistry of portraits are definitely couldn’t be ignored. It fully develop their own theories and works, Its authenticity and realism , with a value of research. Portrait was rised─ once in the Tang Dynasty, and another one in the Ming Dynasty. Because of its highly skills literati painters despise the portrait painting in the Song dynasty, and it started to transferred to the common People, fortunately, by practical and functional needs of worship, portait paintings are left a lot of relevant information available recourse for study. Till the Ming and Qing Dynasties by the rise of Po-Chen school, Portrait paintings have been major turning point in the aspect on production techniques. Changing times tends to make portraits of functional diversity, Its content re-defined, portrait painting studies rise the attention of scholar. This dissertation is divided into five chapters, the first chapter focuses on explain the main motivation initiated research purpose and research methods; The second chapter focuses on the history of Chinese Portraiture and portraits of the development and status in the history of Chinese painting; The third chapter discusses on the ancient Chinese painting portraits theory; Chapter four is on the basis of content and functionality depicted in ancient Chinese portraits into "Yu Yung portait", "in recognition of meritorious service portait", "literati portait" and "ancestor portait" and discussed ; The fifth chapter is conclusion, summary description of portraits of great significance in the history of Chinese painting.
