Critically, illumination is realized through a multimode fiber with three different lasers as the light source to minimize the footprint of the light source. To overcome the limited angle of illumination (due to the small NA of the fiber), a miniature diffuser is attached to the distal end of the fiber to broaden the angle of illumination, and even become to a point light source ( from 10° to more than 80°). There are three kinds of laser sources: supercontinuum laser and RGB laser module. We adjust the illumination spectrum of the lasers to meet the medical illumination specs. Accordingly, we have compared and characterized the illuminance, optical power, spectral profile, intensity distribution, and image quality with the medical LED light source. However, the cost of supercontinuum laser is very expensive and the weight of supercontinuum laser is very heavy. Those disadvantage of supercontinuum laser cause them can’t be portable endoscopic system, but the RBG laser with a multimode fiber and CMOS camera could be portable endoscopy. In vivo animal experiment is also conducted to demonstrate the feasibility of laser light sources based illumination. In this way, highly compact endoscopic systems is realized.
