In order to reveal the motivation for which baseball played joined the baseball team of Retired Servicemen Engineering Agency (RSEA hereafter) and the daily lives of team members, this thesis examines the historical development of RSEA by analyzing the interviews with the participants of the team. First, this thesis reviews the history of the baseball sports in Hualien from the period of Japanese rule to the postwar era in general and looks closely the development of RSEA in particular. Second, it analyzes the external and internal causes for which the RSEA baseball team was created. Especially, the external causes includes the international politics, economy and social situation. The internal causes refer to the official policies of sports and Xiaozhang Yan who played critical role in founding the RSEA team and in the development of baseball sports in Taiwan. Third, according to the interviews of the participants of RSEA baseball team, this thesis turns to examine the motivations for which the RSEA team’s participants took part in the team. The motivations include internal and external reasons. Whereas culture of social groups, physical qualification and self-actualization were the internal reasons, social value, education, and financial abilities were the external reasons. Especially, the RSEA baseball participants were often influenced by external motivations. Apart from analyzing participants’ motivations, this thesis also uses the interviews of the RSEA baseball participants to demonstrate the operation of the RSEA baseball team and the players’ daily lives. Finally, this thesis addresses how the creation and moving of Hualian RSEA baseball team has influenced the development of Hualian baseball.
