They are all operating in the sea to transport/deliver daily commodity over the world. However, due to considerations such as rough sea, mechanical failure, or human negligence, lots of casualties occur each year associated with a large number of deck operators or tourists. Utilizing the technologies such as satellite navigation, helicopter, or dispatching of the boats onboard to search for the missing people dropping from the decks is not only time consuming but also with poor efficacy. In view of the advancement of the information, communication technology (ICT), a falling overboard detection system is proposed by this thesis. Deck personnel is quipped with the gear integrating body sensors, wireless communication, A-GPS allocating/positioning system, and electronic fences to monitor the events of falling overboard. Once the event popped up/triggered, the proposed system can immediately activate the alarm and display the relative position of the ship and the persons falling off expressed in GPS coordinates on the screen so that the rescue team can always pinpoint the updated GPS coordinates of the victim, resulting in a successful rescue mission. The experimental results show the system can assist the ship to get the person position of the sea, so that the rescue operation can be more rapid and accurate.
