Although many domestic scholars have discussed the top of succession of Taiwanese enterprises, however the discussions were mainly focused on large enterprises with little coverage on SMEs. The discussions on the SMEs in the Taiwan machinery industry are even more difficult to find. Based on the analysis of secondary data and review of relevant research as well as field study such as in-depth interviews, this study covers three structures: succession of enterprise entity, wealth inheritance and cultural continuation as well as two aspects: general problems and individual cases. The study discusses the major issues that the first generation of the SMEs in Taiwan machinery industry faces and their thoughts in the process of succession. The study attempts to answer the questions about how to plan the succession, whether the second generation who takes over the enterprise has to be family remembers and whether the second generation is ready to undertake the business responsibility of the enterprise. By answering these questions, the study proposes some feasible advices on succession in those SMEs in Taiwan machinery industry. According to the interviews in the study, succession requires planning and it does not occur naturally. The study proposes three dimensions to be considered in the practice of succession namely succession of enterprise entity, wealth inheritance and cultural continuation which allows the second generation to not only take over the entity and wealth that generated by the first generation, but also to understand the philosophy, values and spirit behind these tangible assets. The successor also gets to understand the characteristics and charm of this company, thus the successor takes over more willingly and the business started by the entrepreneurial generation can continue smoothly.
