description The current European crisis fueled by the Russian Federation does nothing but destabilize the international security climate, the main goal being to achieve their desire to conquer new territories. The actions of the Russian Federation to gain access to the Black Sea through the annexation of Crimea in 2014, provoked major discussions about the expansion of influence and power in the area, in the current situation in the area, the necessary example to prove this theory. The Russian Federation is now privileged on the international stage as an actor that still has such international rights, and in this way sanctions have been applied to countries that limit access to funds and resources, in order to detect hostile attitudes in the international environment. The objectives of this paper are first to identify the factors that led to the escalation of the situation in the extended Black Sea area and secondly to present the main risks, threats, and vulnerabilities that could arise in Romania due to the situation in Ukraine and actions which the Russian Federation practices in the area. The research methods used to take into account the qualitative ones through the analysis of documents, and their interpretation to justify the research topic and to identify the cause-effect relationship. The results of the research show that the vast area of the Black Sea is part of an unfinished security process, the elimination of the legacy of the Cold War, but also one that began and is ongoing, reconfiguring the geopolitical system, followed by the desire to reaffirm the role of the Russian Federation as a global player. Romania, through its strategic position at the regional level and its status as an active member of the EU and NATO, must pay special attention to discouraging and defending itself from the actions that the Russian Federation has in the extended Black Sea area. The study's findings show that the Russian Federation wants to strengthen offensive military capabilities in this area by creating a regional ban, restricting access to the Pontic Basin, and counterbalancing NATO's development capabilities on the eastern flank. NATO should not be a threat to the Russian Federation, because it is a defensive alliance, even if the Russian Federation claims to be just a victim of the West.
