Description
Summary:Received: 2021/7/7  |   Correction: 2022/2/21   |   Accepted: 2022/2/21Simply put, the meaning of sayr al-āfāq (the external journey) is to think about God’s creations in order to achieve and strengthen one’s religious beliefs. The Qur’an emphasizes it as one of the main ways to know the truths of the universe, its mabdaʾ (the Origin), its maʿād (the Return), and so on. Furthermore, the external journey is possible, according to the affirmations made by the Qur’anic verses, in three ways, namely ḥiss (sense), ʿaql (intellect), and shuhūd (intuition). The present research examines sensory cognition and its validity in the external journey, as one of the mentioned epistemological ways, through an analytical method, citing the Qur’anic verses and the exegetes’ viewpoints. The results show that it is vitally important in this type of knowledge to use the sensory cognition purposefully and with the right orientation. Qur’anic exegetes have also considered the precise and maximum use of the sensory cognition as the first step towards dealing with natural phenomena, paying attention to its important role as a gateway to enter data into the human heart for thinking and receiving knowledge. However, due to the limitations of the senses, such as being restricted with outward and horizontal cognition, and despite its general necessity and validity in the external journey, the human sensory knowledge is not sufficient at all. It is indeed the first epistemological step, which albeit should be completed with intellectual cognition and deepened with intuitive achievements, the goal of which is to create or strengthen religious belief.Noorhasan Fatideh, T; Hasani Bafarani, T; Diari, M.T.
