Description
Summary:Java is a peculiar island. Almost all the Javanese are muslims but movertheless the old pre-islamic and Hindu-Buddhist background is style present. The common explanation closely related the caracteristic features of Javenese Islam ta its original spreading: the new religion was late coming (XVth century) and carried into Indonesian seas by peaceful Gujerati marchants. But sorne problems were not yet solved: Why did Islam spread in the archipelago and not on mainland southeast-asia? Why did it spread so late in Java whereas sumatranese muslim states already existed in the XIIIth century? How is it understandable that so many millions of Javanese converted themselves to a new faith consequently to a mere contact with muslim traders? Religious anthropology and new historical approaches in the field of mentalities are very helpful to bring more explanations.
