Summary:Transdermal drug delivery systems offer a noninvasive method of delivering drugs through the skin surface, which circumvents problems associated with metabolic breakdown, uncontrollable biodistribution after initial drug administration, and limited patient compliance. The most common implement for transdermal drug delivery is the transdermal patch (TDP), which is a flexible, medicated adhesive patche that can be placed on any available skin surface for targeted delivery. In this perspective, we summarize the most recent advancements in transdermal drug delivery patches and highlight gaps that can be filled with advanced sensor development.
