Description
Summary:The twenty years of Inrap’s existence were framed by two legal texts, the first promulgated in 2001 (which was followed by the 2003 reform), and that of 2016; this legislation has profoundly marked both the evolution of preventive archaeology and that of this institution. They ensure the scientific credibility of archaeological activity and the professional efficiency of teams, and have made the French archaeology system serve as a model abroad, permitting the federation of the community of scholars well beyond local teams. This legislative and regulatory framework is obviously a product of intense debates on the definition of archaeology, the conditions in which it is carried out and its place in society.
