Effects of stannum on microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg-Zn-Y-Zr alloy

Description
Summary:The microstructures and mechanical properties of the as-cast Mg-5.5Zn-1Y-0.5Zr based alloys with 0-1 wt pct stannum (Sn) micro addition were investigated. The results indicate that Sn has an obvious effect on refining microstructures, which is related to the variations of the hindering effect to grain growth and constitutional supercooling resulted from the segregated Sn atoms at advancing solid/liquid interfaces. Tensile tests indicate that the alloys exhibit excellent increasing strength but decreasing elongation with increasing Sn content, which is attributed to the improved grain bonding strength.
