Description
Summary:The Merovingian cemetery of Metzervisse was the object of a rescue excavation in 1995. The typo-chronological analysis of objects discovered in the graves enables us to date the cemetery from the 7th to – eventually – the 9th century AD. Situated very near to a contemporary settlement and established on the ruins of a Gallo-Roman villa, the cemetery comprises 59 inhumations. The quality of the finds, belt buckles and other belt items, jewellery and weapons, indicate a hierarchical society, dominated by an elite of aristocratic warriors. Anthropological and taphonomical studies have provided important data on the population and their state of health as well as early medieval funerary practices, stressed by two particular inhumations. The discovery of the Metzervisse cemetery completes the remarkable group of Merovingian cemeteries of the northern part of the Moselle department. Its study enlarges our knowledge of the history and the historical topography of the Thionville surroundings.
