Description
Summary:The goal of the present paper is to show the complexity of auxiliary verbs category, and in particular to study semantic differences in the meanings of particular verbs, their structural and syntactical features. Linguists studying the Swahili language do not very closely examine auxiliary verbs. Authors usually provide only a short list of this verb category. The verbs mentioned in grammatical studies have been described more thoroughly. There has also been undertaken an attempt of finding new verbs that could be included in the auxiliary group. The whole topic has been treated within the aspect of grammaticalization that is inseparably connected with the issue of auxiliary verb. Research for this paper has been based on sources characteristic for the standard form of the Swahili language. These are mainly works of literature, especially dramas and press articles. We have also benefited from texts included in the Swahili Language Corpus at Helsinki University Language Corpus Server.
