| Summary: | Transplantation, one of the most important advances of modern medical technology,
offers patients longer and quality of life. However, transplantation is limited by the number of
organs donated and also the growing gap between organ supply and demand means that many
patients lose their hopes and lives. The shortage of organs has increased the importance of
understanding the attitudes towards organ donation and we see an increase in the number of
studies highlighting the demographic factors, beliefs and attitudes relating to the individual's
willingness to donate. In our country and all western countries in accordance with legislation,
organ donation depends on the decision of the family of cadaver and 75% of decasead donor
families in our country refuse to donate. For this reason, determining the factors affecting the
family decision is of great importance in terms of increasing the donation rates. When
examining studies conducted with donor and non-donor families in the organ donation
process it is seen that the the significant factors associated with denial of consent are the
misunderstanding of brain death; knowledge about the deceased’s wishes; cultural/religious
beliefs; and the approach of the individual making the request. The purpose of this article is to
give information about the reasons of denial of consent in the organ donation and the
empirical studies carried out in our country. |
