Description
Summary:Their names are Wolfgang Baetcke, Joseph Cerny, Hermann Gerchstein, Eduard John, Charles Kübler, Oskar Mehle, Jacob Oekena, Max Pretzfelder, Peter Quint, Albert Rocza, Christian Schmenger, Sebastian Schaedler, Hubertus van Deem, Charles Wucke... They are German or Austrian, sailors, tailors, locksmiths, merchants in Algiers, publicists or artists, fathers or bachelors, rich or poor, famous or anonymous, pacifists or warmongers. All of them have in common that they were interned in the civilian camp of Garaison (Hautes-Pyrénées) between 1914 and 1918 and that they escaped via Spain, or tried to do so. The investigation will aim to map the escapes and the points of passage from the Garaison camp to Spain. It will then attempt to develop a typology of the escapees, their motivations, conditions and sanctions, and will shed light on the French point of view (institutions and individuals).
